Welcome to the shooting range. Our firearms club is called the Midland Sporting Firearms Association (M.S.F.A.) This club is for people who wish to shoot & compete with pistols & smallbore rifles.
Club Update
As most of you are aware, the range has been closed by the Police and other government agencies for maintenance issues, including lead remediation work. Unfortunately, this is likely to take some weeks to complete, depending on contractor availability. We cannot give an exact re-opening date at this time.
If you have completed your required number of matches for the year, you don’t need to do anything. If you are short on match shoots however, you may need to contact other clubs and see if they can allow you to shoot with them. We will accept matches from other clubs during this unusual situation. Our preferred option would be to roll outstanding matches into next year but cannot confirm police approval at this time.
What do we do at the shooting range?
At our shooting range we are able to do a variety of different things. With our qualified professionals we are able to demonstrate firearms training services as well as provide you with a range of qualifications. You are also more than welcome to come down and just have a shoot.
For beginner shooters we have out ‘introduction to handguns’ session. During this session you will have the opportunity to try out a .22 semi-automatic pistol, a .357 revolver as well as a 9mm semi-automatic pistol. During this time you will be fully supervised by a qualified range officer who will answer any questions you may have as well as show you the proper safety of handling a firearm. Plus if you bring a friend, you will get 2 lessons for almost the price of one!
If you would like to be a part of the M.S.F.A. shooting club come down, present us with your national police clearance and we will get the paperwork started. To be a member of our club it is required that you pass our mandatory training lessons. You will then be on probation for a period of either 3 or 6 months depending on your firearm. This probationary period is a government mandated requirement. Club members are expected to familiarize themselves with and adhere to the rules and regulations of the range. Click the link below to familiarize yourself with all rules and regulations. Gun mart and Tackle is an approved storage facility for firearms. This is a service that we provide for a small fee. If this sounds like something you’re interested in please don’t hesitate to give us a call or come in store for a chat with our friendly staff.
Pistol lessons:
For pistol lessons patrons must be over 18 years of age or 16 years of age with a parent of guardian who will accompany them throughout the duration of their training and shooting. If you are new to pistol shooting, a minimum of 4 lessons are needed to shoot handguns in the range. People with previous handgun experience must show a current club membership cars, or another form of proof of their experience and training. If you do not have these items then we are able to provide you with an assessment of your skills and abilities.
Rifle lessons:
For rifle lessons patrons must be over the age of 18 or 16 with a parent or guardian who will accompany the during their training and shooting. A minimum of 2 lessons (possibly 3) are needed to shoot rifles on the range.
Our indoor range:
Our indoor range is comfortably cooled all summer so you can shoot without the distraction of heat, haze, flies, mozzies and other annoying wildlife that you cannot shoot. Entrance to the range is controlled via a two door security system that is operated by the range officer on duty. Exiting from the range is as easy as pushing a couple of buttons. Security cameras monitor inside and outside the range at all times for your safety and security.
The rifle range has a heavy duty shooting bench and a sideways adjustable arm rest center section. This combination with the rifle rests and leather sand bags provided will give you an excellent, steady shooting platform to get the maximum accuracy from your rifle. We also have 2 spotting scopes that you can use to see where your shots are going on the target.
Our rifle range is 34 meters long and 2 people can shoot comfortably either seated or standing. Our targets are computer controlled and move at the touch of a button. The rifle range is approved for all calibers and normal bullet types. Please note, steel core aluminum is forbidden in our gun range.
Our pistol range is 25 meters long and we are approved for all pistol calibers and projectile types except steel core. We also supply patches for patching the holes.
The dust extraction system and air conditioning maintains a steady flow of fresh air at all times on both ranges. Safety glasses and ear protection can be borrowed if you do not have your own. There are also both ladies and men’s toilets and washrooms.
Firearms awareness certificate:
At our ranges you are able to apply to do your firearm awareness certificate tests. This is a requirement for purchasing your first firearm. This assessment involves a 20 question multiple choice test that is based on the firearms safety booklet. (this booklet is available from the WA police firearms website)
Firearms training and re qualification shoots for security guards:
The F.T.S is a registered training organisation offering nationally recognised training in line with the requirements of the WAPOL commercial agents squad. We are a police approved training provider and can provide access to training for all the pre-requisite units for police firearms endorsement. F.T.S is also able to re-qualify security guards with either revolvers or semi-auto pistols. We are able to provide this service 7 days a week but booking in advance is required. If you need to complete your certificate III or the units for Cash in Transit, we will refer you to our fully qualified associates.
At our range we can also train people to safely draw their firearm. This is a skill that takes shooting to a different level and is a must if you want to go on to other disciplines like practical pistol shooting. The range officers are able to help new or experience shooters by offering coaching sessions to improve their skills as well as detailed lessons on field stripping most firearms and cleaning them correctly. When buying your first firearm it can sometimes be difficult to understand how that firearm is disassembled for cleaning. We can help with this and give you some good tips on how to clean your firearm and keep it in good condition.
